Typically the design and construction of a golf course involves the following major steps :

1.1. PLANNING CONCEPT

Experienced urban/resort planner reviews total project site and in conjunction with Golf Course Architect, allocates land / corridors for golf course and clubhouse where a quality course can be built and where it will give greatest landscape benefit to the urban environment.

1.2. LAYOUT AND ROUTING PLAN

Specialist golf course architect prepares plan of the alignment of the course which shows:-

• Tee, green and fairway positions including practice facilities.
• Clubhouse envelope and access roads etc.
• Maintenance compound.
• Halfway houses and other structures.
• Bulk earthworks and relationships with adjoining development.
• Specialist golf course architects will then prepare accurate plans suited to tender and construction.

Detailed design drawings are produced for construction purposes and these generally include:

• Course Routing and Clearing Plan (1:2000).
• Grading Plan (1:1000).
• Drainage Plan (1:1000).
• Greens and Greenside Bunker Plans (1:200).
• Tee and Fairway Bunker Plans (1:500).
• Turfgrass Planting Plan (1:1000).
• Landscape Plan (1:2000).
• Construction specifications and typical construction details.
• Advice on irrigation systems and organisation of irrigation submissions.

1.3. COURSE CONSTRUCTION

Construction can be undertaken a number of ways depending on the project type and the degree of client involvement. It involves:-

• Bulk earthworks.
• Shaping and drainage.
• Irrigation installation.
• Turfing and landscaping.
• Maturation and maintenance.

There are three basic forms of course construction services that Tuohy Associates / Golf Strategies can offer its clients. These are:-

INSPECTION SERVICES
In this service the client contracts directly with an experienced contractor to build the course. We will inspect the construction progress on a regular basis to ensure the design intent is being adhered to.

CONSTRUCTION SUPERVISION, SHAPING AND COURSE MAINTENANCE SERVICE
We have an experienced team of construction supervisors and final earth works shapers who are experienced in modern golf course construction techniques. We would place our team on site to work with the main contractor on a full time basis for the duration of the construction period. This has the advantage of ensuring day-to-day supervision and hands on working of the course by experienced personnel to achieve a high quality result. Our golf course architects would visit the site on a regular basis to monitor progress and design intent.

Further, our construction team includes experienced golf course superintendents and greenkeepers who are available to provide a course maintenance and training package.
Following construction and turfing, one of our supervisors/superintendents would remain on site for a six month period, followed by a monthly visit (of one week duration) for a further six months. In this one year period we would have taken the Client's selected course superintendent through a hands on training program, whilst establishing the turf and maintaining it to a high standard concurrently. Programs for chemical and fertiliser applications would be established and monitored, and training in the use of the latest automatic irrigation systems as well as the day-to-day course maintenance procedures would be included.

TURN KEY CONSTRUCTION SERVICE
We have also developed relationships with a number of earthmoving / civil engineering groups which enables it to offer fixed price design and construct packages to its clients. The advantages to the client are that he knows up front what the course is going to cost and is guaranteed of this, and only has to deal with one group rather than a myriad of consultants and contractors.
